Say hi to Sassy’s little foal! A cute filly (mare) and I named her June. I chose this name because I think it’s cute but it’s also funny since we excepted her to make her arrival in April or May! Both Sassy and June got checked by the vet and they’re both doing great. June is definitely enjoying all the attention and is happily running around while Sassy is trying to keep up.

All minis had their feet trimmed by the farrier. Since I have to haul Spot to the clinic for his farrier appointment, we also took some blood because I suspected he might have Cushing’s disease. Unfortunately the results came back confirming this.
Equine Cushing's Disease is a chronic progressive disease of the pituitary gland of older horses. This causes difficulty in shedding the winter coat, laminitis, chronic infections, weight loss and other problems.
Luckily we caught it in a very early stadium. The shedding is currently his only symptom. I have good hope he will still have multiple comfortable years ahead of him. It does mean he will need more vet check ups and daily medicine for the rest of his life: which means more bills.

We are getting ready for Sassy to have her foal! The vet expects the foal to arrive sometime in April or May. That means this week we are making two stalls in the current shelter of Sassy and Spot. That way they can be separated but still be together. Sassy will be able to have her foal safely and Spot will still be able to be close, smell her and hear her. Since Spot is blind we need to be mindful of his needs as well.
We can’t wait to see what the little foal will look like!

Bibi, Spot, Sassy and Action are up to date on their vaccines again! The vet came to the rescue to gave them the shots that needed, pull blood for coggins (so we can always travel without an issue) and do a fecal exam for Bibi. Since Bibi has dealt with a bad worm problem we need to check her manure regularly to make sure we have the worms under control.

Spots transformation so far. Since coming to the rescue in September 2023 Spot has made a major change physically (as you can see on the before and after photo) but also mentally! He starts to trust people more, is now looking for attention and slowly trying to make a connection. I will let the photos speak for themselves.

Spot went in today for his second eye surgery. I just received a text from the vet the eye removal went great and Spot is recovering well from sedation. The pressure in his head is gone now his eyes are out, he must have had a permanent head ache for years so I can only imagine how much better he will feel now.

Bibi and Action went to the dentist today. Action is on a yearly schedule, Bibi on a 6 month schedule. When Bibi first got to us her teeth were in very bad shape. Luckily she looks way better now after a few treatments. She hasn’t choked in a long and her diarrhea is gone as well, it’s incredible this was all partially related to her dental health issues.

The BIG news is out… Sassy is pregnant! When Sassy and Spot got handed over to the rescue we were told that Sassy could possibly be pregnant. In September we did an ultrasounds and a blood test but both came back inconclusive (a fetus doesn't show on ultrasound under 150 days pregnancy and the blood test came back she was either pregnant or in heat). In December the vet did another ultrasound and it got confirmed she is pregnant. We are expecting a foal in April or May. Horses/minis are pregnant for about 11 months.

Happy new Year! We want to say thank you to everybody who supported the rescue in 2023 and are looking forward to what 2024 will bring us. The day after Christmas we took out Spots’ stitches and his wound is healing perfectly!

Yesterday Bibi’s Mini Rescue hosted the Winter Edition of the Educational Kids Program and it was a huge succes! The kids got to brush the minis, do a little ride on Action, made lunch for the minis and learned about their medical history and needs. Everybody had a wonderful time and I can’t wait to host another Educational Program in spring break. Stay tuned!

Spot had his first eye surgery done a few days ago and everything went according to plan. Him and Sassy stayed at the clinic for a few days so the vet could monitor the wound and change Spot’s bandage daily. Sassy stayed with him as his emotional support. Today we picked them both up again and they seem happy to be home! Now hopefully Spot continues to recover well.

Spot has been in our rescue now for 2 months. Look at how much he has already changed! We are a firm believer that offering the minis a safe place and a well balanced diet is a huge part of their improvement. This together with working close with our medical team makes it possible for the minis to look and feel better quickly.
